6 Simple Tips To Follow For Cleaning Your Fabric Sofa

Sofas and chairs take a lot of wear. They are vulnerable to surface stains, such as from that lovely and very delicious Hot Chocolate you were drinking last night whilst decorating your tree and marks left from your much-loved pets.

Trust me, it happens to everyone, you’re not alone.

But if you don’t clean your Sofa regularly, dirt and grime can become deeply embedded within the fabric, ruining the sofa in the long run.

So to help you out this festive season, we have put together this useful guide on how to clean your fabric sofa:

1.    Firstly, and very importantly, read the manufacturers label.

The labels or tags on your sofa contain valuable information about the fabric. The following signs tell you how you can safely clean your sofa:

W – use water only

S – use only solvent cleaner

SW – both water and solvent cleaner can be used

X – only vacuum your sofa.

Only follow the other advice in this guide if it complies with the information you find on the labels.

2.    Vacuum

After reading the tags, give your sofa a good vacuum. Take off any cushions and make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies.

Your sofa collects crumbs, dust and dead skin cells, so let’s be sure to get rid of all that muck before we continue.

3.    Clean the metal and wood areas

Take a cloth and wipe down the feet, legs and other non-fabric parts of your sofa with soapy water.

4.    Surface clean

You can use a white cloth or hand towel to rub any stains or marks you can see, remembering to bear in mind the information on the tags. Ensure the cloth you use is white – coloured clothes may run and leave a mark on the fabric.

5.    Remove stale smells

If your sofa smells at all, a very simple way to deal with this is by using baking soda.

Generously sprinkle the baking soda all over the sofa and leave it for 20 minutes before vacuuming it up. This should shift most odours but if you find it’s not enough, you can mix the baking soda with a dry carpet cleaner and do the same thing – this should also make your sofa look noticeably cleaner.

6.    Remove the stains

Here is a very easy technique and a cleaning solution that you can mix yourself to combat stains on your fabric sofa:

  •          Mix together in a spray bottle, 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of washing up liquid and 1 teaspoon of white vinegar.
  •          Spray the stain with the solution and rub with a soft, white cloth until the stain lifts.
  •          Moisten the second cloth with clean water and blot the stain again to remove any soap.
  •          Blot the stain once more with a dry cloth.
  •          Dry the area with a fan.

Make sure you test the solution on a hidden area of your sofa before you begin cleaning.
